Following any child’s death, it is likely that a whole range of professionals will become involved, some of whom will already be known to the family, others may be called in to offer support, or to help in the process of trying to understand why that death occurred. It is for those professionals that this training resource is intended. The materials used here are based on the experience of a number of different professionals in working with bereaved families. Over the years we have come to recognise that the things we do as professionals in response to a child’s death can both help or hinder a family’s grief. Many professionals across the country will have little experience in working with bereaved families, and sometimes can say or do things that add to the trauma faced by families. It is our hope that these materials will contribute towards improving things for both children and families; ensuring that each child’s death is properly and sensitively investigated and evaluated, to establish why that child died, and where possible, to learn lessons to prevent future child deaths.

Those of us who have not experienced a bereavement like this can only begin to imagine what you as a family will be going through. We would hope that those professionals who are directly in contact with you will have provided you with information about their involvement, what needs to happen in response to your child’s death, and what sources of support are available to you, both locally and nationally. We are unable to provide direct resources for parents and families on this site, but provide some links below to some key national organisations that may be able to provide some support. Whilst the training materials themselves are password protected, you are welcome to browse through other material on the site, and we would always welcome any comments or feedback on the content. The information sheet for parents provides some information on the national child death review processes.
